I’m in love

Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In Brave, a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts. Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (Kevin McKidd), surly Lord MacIntosh (Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Wise Woman (Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

(synopsis of the movie from Wiki)

Not only Mérida looks absolutely cute with all that curly red hair, but knowing that Kelly Macdonald is lending her adorable voice to her is enough for me to watch it. Well, the fact that Emma Thompson, Julie Walters and Kevin McKidd are in this project makes things even more interesting.

Movies I’ve seen lately

Like many people out there, I’m a Millennium fan. It all started with the books, then with the Swedish movies/series (I have a huge girl crush on Noomi Rapace) and finally, as soon as the trailer of the american movie was released, I knew I had to see it.

Last week, I finally had the opportunity. Did I like it ? Yes, very much so. Somehow they managed to add some new elements more similar to the book and still recreate the same mysterious and dangerous atmosphere.

Rooney Mara was the star of the movie. Her transformation is breathtaking, but in some scenes I saw her much more like a sensitive teen than the tough as nails Noomi Rapace Lisbeth. What I liked about the character in the Swedish version was her strength, like nothing could break her down, even if deep down we could feel how lonely she felt and how fragile she was. That restrain made her fascinating. In any case, both Lisbeths remain interesting characters and both actresses did a perfect job.

Daniel Craig was a good Mikael Blomkvist, but he was a little too buff to play the middle age journalist. I read somewhere that he gained 10 pounds for the movie. I didn’t really noticed, my eyes were fascinated by his abs…

A little note about the soundtrack, I absolutely loved the new version of a favourite song of mine, The Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin.

The Immigrant Song by Trent Reznor and Karen O.

My friends absolutely wanted to go see this movie mostly because of Michael Fassbender. His Jane Eyre didn’t convinced them (they remain completely in love by Toby Stephens, just like me !) but the man has some charisma that none of us could resist. The excellent critics also made us curious about this apparently original movie.

I left the theater completely bored after watching endless sex scenes. The first ones were surprising, it’s not everyday you see an actor doing a full frontal. Sex was in almost every corner, and that killed the movie for me. I was expecting more about Brandon, his past, his sister… We can read between the lines what happened, but it wasn’t enough for me.

Alice in Wonderland

Yesterday I saw the first stills from the new Tim Burton movie, Alice in Wonderland. They are gorgeous!

Mad Hatter

Here’s Johny Depp as Mad Hatter. Funny thing, I read in several blogs and boards people saying he looked like Elijah Hood and it’s true.;-)

Red Queen

The amazingly talented Helena Bonham-Carter as Queen of Hearts. What can I say, I know she will be perfect.

The White Queen

I was quite surprised with the choice of Anne Hatthaway for the White Queen, but I do like her even if her voice can sometimes annoy me a little.

Alice

Mia Wasikowska as Alice Kingsley. She looks lovely even if more grown up than I imagined her character…

Tweedledum and Tweedledee

Tweedledum and Tweedledee. I love their clothes!

Also, Alan Rickman will be the Caterpillar (curious but funny!) and Stephen Fry is the Cheshire cat and I can perfectly imagine him in that role. See the entire cast here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1014759/

Eagerly waiting for…

Blindness!

I loved the book and after seeing the following video, I’m even more curious. Saramago is not really known for being a very emotional person, at least in public… ;-)

Oh and did I mentioned that I love Julianne Moore (excellent actress and gorgeous woman) and Mark Ruffalo? :)

X-Files: I Want to Believe

Since I learned that another adventure with Special Agent Fox Mulder and Special Agent  Dana Scully was about to hit the big screen, I immediately dig up my X-Files DVD’s from my storage boxes. There’s 9 seasons and I wanted to see everything before the movie’s release. I’m in the middle of season 6 and the only thing I can say is that this series still work for me.

I was a huge fan back in the 90’s and I never lost an episode in TV. Obviously, I’m curious about the upcoming movie but fearing the result might be as “good” as the previous movie… What happened to Mulder and Scully between the end of season 9 and this movie ? The plot is still a secret and little is shown in the trailer. I read somewhere that a new trailer will be presented along with The Happening (Night Shyamalan) the 11th June (13th in the US and UK). I’m eagerly waiting for the 30th  July (other release dates here)…

Then She Found Me and Angels & Demons

Helen Hunt, Colin Firth and Bette Midler. This seems to be fun ! :)

Also it seems that Tom Hanks is going to return for Angels & Demons as Robert Langdon and this time Ewan McGregor and Ayelet Zurer will be part of the cast. I’m not a big fan o The DaVinci Code movie or even the book for many reasons but I always imagined Langdon as a complete different person. Let’s hope this one will be better than the previous!

Watching too much TV…

Lately I’ve been catching up with some movies I intended to see for ages, like Lions for Lambs. I don’t like Tom Cruise but Meryl Streep is one of my favorite actresses. She is not at her best here and Redford has done better, but the story is interesting and the acting convincing enough.

I also managed to watch again the 3 seasons of ITV’s Miss Marple. I know this series have many faults and some episodes are not faithful to the books, however I can’t keep myself from doing a rerun times to times. Joan Hickson is terribly missed, she is the perfect Miss Marple but Geraldine McEwan does a fair job. I read yesterday that she is retired and Julia McKenzie (Mrs. Forrester from Cranford) will replace her in season 4. Can’t wait to see those new episodes!

Btw, did you know Marple and Poirot existed in anime ?! http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=FNhubE5Kdxs It’s a bit strange…

Finally yesterday evening, I was in the mood for something light and funny. Paris, Je t’aime was the perfect choice. Several short-films about the several arrondissements of Paris and the city’s magic works smoothly. Some stories were more interesting than others and the only one that did nothing for me at all was “Porte de Choisy” (XIIIe arrondissement): strange plot, bad actors and far from being as comic as the director intended, I think.
Some of my favorite directors are present: Bruno Podalydès, Alfonso Cuarón, Walter Salles, Joel and Ethan Cohen and this is what makes this “movie” so especial along with the fact that I know most of these places and some are very special to me.
